General Assembly: Should 18 Be New Dropout Age?

Maryland's General Assembly is poised to approve a bill to increase the state's minimum dropout age from 16 to 17, and gradually to 18.

Should Maryland require high school students to be 18 years old in order to drop out?  The General Assembly is expected to pass a bill proposing to increase Maryland's minimum school dropout age from 16 to 18 years old, according to a report by WTOP. Tell us what you think in the comments. The change will align Maryland with Virginia and D.C., where the dropout age is already set at 18. "Gov. Martin O'Malley is expected to sign the bill, which is on its third and final reading in the House," the report states. The change—according to the bill—is gradual, with the minimum age first increasing to 17 on July 1, 2015, and to 18 two years later. The bill provides some exceptions for students to dropout early, including: kids who graduate early…

State Considers Stiffer Penalties for Laser Lights

Annapolis lawmakers are considering legislation to increase the penalties associated with pointing a laser at an aircraft.

Pointing a laser light at an aircraft is definitely dangerous—when the light hits the cockpit windshield it spreads out and can blind the pilot and crew and could cause them to crash, according to a recent WJZ-TV report. Back in April, a 13-year-old boy from Parkville was arrested after he allegedly pointed a laser light at a Maryland State Police helicopter, blinding the crew. The boy was charged with reckless endangerment and misuse of a laser pointer. Lawmakers in Annapolis are considering currently considering legislation that would have that Parkville teen charged with the equivalent of second-degree assault of a police officer as a result of the incident. The bill was introduced by Del. Sam Arora (D-Montgomery County) and a companion…

Del. Boteler: Maryland Shouldn't Wait on 'Caylee's Law'

The state legislature is considering a bill that would allow authorities to begin an investigation when a parent or guardian fails to report a child missing after a set period of time.

The following was submitted as a letter to the editor by Del. Joe Boteler III, a Republican who represents Maryland's 8th legislative district. It has only been a couple of months since Casey Anthony was found not guilty of first degree murder of her two-year-old daughter Caylee. However, America bound into action as soon as the verdict was read. One of the main concerns was that Anthony never notified law enforcement that her daughter was missing. Because of the sudden retort over this fact, the Maryland General Assembly has recognized the need for legislation that requires a parent or guardian to report to law enforcement, after a specific period of time, that the child is missing. If this process fails to be completed, an investigation …

POLL: Would a State Gas Tax Help or Hurt?

Gov. Martin O'Malley proposed gas tax bill is expected to be introduced in the next couple of days.

During his State of the State address in Annapolis, Gov. Martin O'Malley proposed a gasoline tax that opponents estimate would add 18 cents per gallon to the 23 cents in state gas taxes. The bill is expected to be introduced in the next couple of days. The additional revenue would create "7,500 new jobs, building needed roads, bridges, and public transit" in Maryland, said O'Malley. Republicans and Democrats representing the Parkville-Overlea area have decried tax increases during the 2012 legislative session. Early last month, Del. Joe Boteler III (R-8th District) and Del. John Cluster (R-8th District) held a community meeting in Perry Hall to voice their opposition to potential tax increases. As the meeting began, Boetler spoke up about …

These guys vote no on everything. I don't like the gas tax increase either. We have to have money to pay their salaries. They have to work hard three months a year. School teachers have to be paid....Police...Firefighters. I am totaly against that super highway they built for Billons of dollars. They have to advertise to get people to use. That is a waste Ehrlich and O'Malley collaberated on. …   more ›

Del. Boteler: Lotto Should Benefit Veterans

The Baltimore County delegate is proposing legislation to require the state lottery to earmark a portion of proceeds to benefit of the Veteran's Trust Fund.

Editor's Note: Republican Del. Joe Boteler III of Legislative District 8, which includes parts of Parkville, Carney and Perry Hall, submitted the following statement as a letter to the editor. America would not be what it is today without the commitment and dedication of our military professionals. It is our duty to serve those that have served our county, and the state of Maryland is fully devoted to this goal. This is why I am proposing legislation to conduct an annual lottery to benefit the Maryland Veterans Trust Fund. The act would require The State Lottery Agency to deposit a certain percentage of the proceeds into the Veterans Trust Fund to support and aid our veterans. The money would go towards education assistance, housing, and …

Del. Boteler: 'Tax and Spend Mentality Continues'

Republican Del. Joe Boteler III said he will fight against statewide tax increases.

Editor's Note: Republican Del. Joe Boteler III of Legislative District 8, which includes parts of Perry Hall, Carney and Parkville, submitted the following statement as a letter to the editor. As the 2012 session begins, the tax and spend mentality continues. A commission appointed by the governor, has recommended that the Maryland Legislature deals with the shortfall that has appeared in Transportation Trust Fund. Their solution is to raise a series of vehicle fees, public transportation fares, and the gasoline tax by 15 cents per gallon. Over the years Maryland’s transportation funds have been used inappropriately to pay for projects unrelated to transportation needs. Revenues deposited into the Transportation Trust Fund are not …
