Moms Talk: MSAs and Schoolwide Stress

A good night's sleep and nutritious breakfast is the best preparation for students.

As Maryland enters its season for state assessment testing, everyone involved gets a little jittery. Administration wants to ensure the highest scores possible for school standings, teachers want to reflect all the hard work they have put into curriculum, and students want to do well, too. This isn't a test kids can cram for in a few days; teachers can review material for a week or two prior to the test, but if the school and its teachers are doing their jobs, scores will reflect as much.  Make sure students have eaten a nutritious breakfast and get eight hours of sleep prior to test taking. Moms Talk: Discipline in the Classroom

Assertive discipline and classroom management in your child's school.

A mom with a kindergartner and a first grader, I'm just discovering the nuances of the parent-teacher relationship. It quickly becomes obvious when a teacher's style of discipline and behavior management differs from my own. After some reading, I discovered that many teachers take on the philosophy, oftentimes modified, called Assertive Discipline. John: Agreed! We need to stop all this pampering and political correctness. Children need to learn the difference between right and wrong in their homes as well as in their schools.
