Men's Soccer: CCBC Essex Season Comes to Abrupt End

The Knights run of consecutive Region XX titles ends at four after losing to the College of Southern Maryland Wednesday on penalty kicks.

CCBC Essex's hope of getting back to the NJCAA Division I national tournament came to an abrupt end on Wednesday. College of Southern Maryland upset the Knights in the Region XX semifinals at Anne Arundel Community College. The two teams tied 0-0 after two overtimes, but College of Southern Maryland advanced to the championship match after outscoring CCBC Essex 4-2 on penalty kicks. The loss put the Knights in unfamiliar territory as they had won the Region XX title every year from 2007-10 and advanced to the national tournament twice. CCBC Essex ended its season at 12-2-3. CCBC Essex forward Mikias Teketele—a NJCAA Division I All Region XX Second Team selection in 2010—remembers how he felt after that loss and is confident that if the Knights get another shot at nationals, the result will be different. “I know what it takes to play at the college level now,” said Teketele, a former Archbishop Curley standout who had 15 goals and eight assists last season. Whether the rest of the Knights understand …
