For two nights this weekend, Baltimore will be home to the King. Or, the Kings, it should be said. There might not be exactly 100 Elvises at the eponymous "Night of 100 Elvises" Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at Baltimore's historic Lithuanian Hall, but one thing is for certain: Parkville's Tommy El will be there. Tommy El—who prefers to use his stage name—has performed at the annual event for 10 of the 19 years the event has run downtown. He never intended to be involved; heck, he never even meant to become an Elvis tribute artist (generally the preferred term, though El said he prefers "impersonator"). It all started, as many things do, with karaoke in Essex. "I just wanted to sing to my wife for our fifteenth wedding anniversary," he said. So he …

The school collected recyclables during American Education Week to celebrate America Recycles Day.
America Recycles Day, Nov. 15, coincided with American Education Week and a group of students at Villa Cresta Elementary School took it on themselves to help green the community. Over 100 students from the school participated in the weeklong drive by collecting aluminum cans, glue sticks, batteries, writing tools and plastic bags from their neighbors. In all, Villa Cresta Green Team advisor Stephanie Foy said that students managed to collect: "We made a difference. Villa Cresta is helping to save our Earth," Foy wrote in an email. The Green Team, which was founded in the 2010-2011 school year, is made up of about 30 third-, fourth- and fifth-graders at the Parkville school.

Following a meeting with the Double Rock Community Association, the Maryland State Highway Administration will put into place a plan to deal with erosion between the neighborhood and the Beltway.
The Maryland State Highway Administration is planning to undertake a $500,000 to $1 million project to fix a serious erosion issue in a Parkville neighborhood beginning in the summer of 2013. David Peake, the state agency's engineer for District 4—which includes Baltimore and Harford Counties—said that a team of engineers has evaluated the situation in the Double Rock Lane townhome community that backs up to the Baltimore Belway and decided to move forward with the project. "We’ve had an erosion problem there right off the Beltway ... if you’re heading on the inner loop, the off ramp to go southbound on Belair Road—there’s a townhome community there: Double Rock," Peake said. "Engineers have looked at the erosion and decided we need a …

It's hard to write about this week's photograph without naming the church in the photo. At the time the picture was taken, back in 1904, this church stood in Parkville—today, a church of (mostly) the same name still stands there but it looks pretty much not-at-all-the-same. The photograph above was downloaded from the Baltimore County Public Library Legacy Web photo collection. It was originally taken by Mrs. Douglas Horstman. "The frame structure was built in 1895 to replace an earlier stone chapel built in 1839. It was replaced by another structure in 1954," according to a description on the library website. Can you guess where this photo was taken? Leave your best guess and share your memories of Parkville-Overlea in the comments.

The following information was provided by the Baltimore County Police Department. In cases where a criminal charge is noted, the information supplied does not indicate a conviction.
A Middle River man and a 17-year-old from Nottingham have been arrested and charged in connection with an alleged drug-deal-turned-armed-robbery. Around 7:30 p.m Nov. 19, two people met with 27-year-old Francisco Daniel Lasanta and Caleb Joseph Auberg in order to buy some marijuana, according to Lt. Ron Brooks of the police department's White Marsh precinct. The victims got into a vehicle in the 500 block of Dale Avenue with Lasanta and Auberg, at which point they tried to rob the victims of the cash being used to transact the deal, Brooks said. Police were called to the scene and one of the suspects fled into the neighborhood and was arrested in the 5900 block of Daybreak Terrace. Lasanta, of the 200 block of Riverthorn Road, faces three …
The second-grade classes at Carney Elementary School had a special visitor late last week.
Students at Carney Elementary School took some time out last week for a visit from a special guest and an opportunity to learn a little something about money and budgeting. Holly Klarman, of Point Breeze Credit Union, and "Joe the Monkey" visited each second grade classroom on Friday to teach students about how to spend money wisely, according to second grade teacher Michelle Wolfe. "Mrs. Klarman read a book to the students that taught them about wants and needs and how to make decisions about how to spend money," Wolfe wrote in an email. "This went perfectly with the money unit we've been studying and will compliment the social studies economics unit we teach in the second term." Wolfe explained that the story Klarman read to the students…

What would a turkey be on Thanksgiving without its faithful side companions? Often more popular than the turkey itself, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and other favorites are staples of the food coma-inducing meal. Try one of the recipes below to bring a new taste to your Thanksgiving feast. Roasted Winter Squash Gauge the amount of squash you’ll need by allowing 1 small squash (acorn and butternut are good choices) for every four people. Cut each squash in half lengthwise and remove seeds. Brush sides and inner cavity with olive oil and place flesh-side down on a lightly-oiled baking sheet. Roast for approximately 45 minutes or until flesh is very soft and easy pulls away from the skin. After removing squash from oven, let …

Tommy El is undoubtedly the most talented Elvis Presley impersonator you will see and hear. I have seen him perform many times. He truly ressembles the King when he appears on stage and even does many of his physical moves that Elvis did in his earlier years. If you have the opportunity to see him perform, you must take advantage of it.   more ›
