Stoneleigh, Oakleigh Elementaries Making Snowflakes for Sandy Hook

All county residents are invited to participate in the 'Winter Wonderland' project.

The Stoneleigh and Oakleigh elementary school Parent Teacher Associations are doing their parts to make the holiday season a little brighter for the Newtown community. The Connecticut town was shook when a gunman killed 26 people, including 20 kids, at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14. On Jan. 4, county residents are invited to stop by the cafeteria at Oakleigh Elementary School in Parkville from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. to create handmade snowflakes that would be used to decorate the Sandy Hook building, according to a flyer distributed by the PTAs. Stoneleigh and Oakleigh are working with the Connecticut PTA, in connection with Sandy Hook, to make this Winter Wonderland project possible. Participants are asked to bring scissors if …

Oakleigh Elementary Rallies For Breast Cancer Awareness

Students, teachers and parents at the Parkville school will donate hair to cancer charity Locks of Love Friday afternoon.

The Oakleigh Elementary School community is rallying in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month. On Friday afternoon, teachers, students and parents at the Parkville school will line up to have their hair cut for the charity Locks of Love. The event is being organized by third-grade teacher Corri Brown, who is among the four teachers that will have 10 inches or more of their hair cut off by stylists from Fine Line Hair Design in Cockeysville. Locks of Love, a charity that donates wigs to children suffering from medical hair loss, requires donors to give at least 10 inches of hair. Brown, who has given hair to the charity before, said that she brought the event to Oakleigh Elementary to teach students that there are many ways to give to …

Oakleigh Elementary Students Set Sail

A group of fourth and fifth graders who raised money to help restore a Living Classrooms ship got to go out today and reap the rewards of their hard work.

It was back in September when Cathy Kurtz first showed photos of the restoration of the Living Classrooms sailboat, the Lady Maryland, to an after school math and science club comprised of fourth and fifth graders at Parkville's Oakleigh Elementary School. Kurtz, a friend of Living Classrooms president James Bond (no, not that one), heard about an ongoing "Every Penny Counts" capital campaign that was underway to raise the $180,000 necessary to pay for the restoration of the vessel which took place over the summer. Her students were ready to take up the cause. They created banners, wrote advertisments for the morning announcements at school and collected change in special containers.
