St. Ursula Student Wins State's Attorney's Anti-Drug Contest

Elizabeth Thomas, an eighth grader at the Parkville private school, won the $750 grand prize in the state's attorney's poster contest.

One student at Parkville's St. Ursula School will end Thursday a little richer than she began it, thanks to her creativity and artistic skill. Elizabeth Thomas, an eighth grader, was named the grand prize winner in State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger's anti-drug poster contest, according to a news release from the state's attorney's office. Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students from 28 Baltimore County middle schools submitted over 3,000 posters with an anti-drug/alcohol theme to the contest and a panel of community leaders representing business, law enforcement and government judged Thomas' to be the very best. Students who pulled down honors in the contest will be presented with their prizes during a ceremony at Towson's historic …

Pop-Up Arts & Crafts Shop Planned For Concert Series

The Parkville Main Street Committee is looking for artists and crafters for the weekly endeavor set to run during the spring concert series.

While Parkvillians are rocking out to the Parkville-Carney Business Association's Spring Concert series at the Lavender Avenue parking lot, just across Harford Road a group of artists and craftsmen will be displaying their wares in a makeshift shop. The pop-up store, conceived by Parkville's Main Street Committee, will run on Friday nights from 5-8 p.m. May 10-June 28 at the Harford Road storefront that used to house Atlantic Deli, next to Jerry D's Restaurant, according to the main street committee's Ruth Baisden. "People have said for years they’d like to see an art gallery, they like what Hamilton is doing with having artists show their goods," Baisden said. "We can find out ... 'is there really a desire for this?' 'Can Parkville …

Local Women Bring Bellydance To Joppa Road Restaurant

A dancer from the troupe Aubergine performs each Sunday at Kitchen of India in Parkville.

It's not easy to find dinner and a show in the Parkville area, but if you have a free Sunday evening you're in luck. Bellydancers from the Towson-based troupe Aubergine perform at 7 p.m. weekly at Kitchen of India on Joppa Road. Nina Rutledge, the troupe leader and a bellydance instructor, said she used to run a student show (called a hafla) at the restaurant and remembered owner Mohammad "Babu" Rahmen from her time there. "Aubergine is my troupe and they started as a student troupe ... we'd do a performance at a nursing home or a local belly dance show," Rutledge said. "Slowly the group got better and better." That's when she decided it was time for them to find a regular gig. Now Rutledge, a Towson resident who performs under the "nom de…

PHOTOS: Local Artist Recreates Ravens Moments

Jamie Clafferty, a Parkville native, creates Ravens artwork and was recently mentioned on social media by injured cornerback Lardarius Webb.

A local artist has taken his hobby to a new level, creating the artwork you see in the gallery above—and it's drawn some attention from at least one player on the Baltimore Ravens. Jamie Clafferty, a Parkville native and die-hard sports fan, creates and sells these original pieces when he's not busy working 60-hour weeks at Beltway Fine Wines. Despite having no formal training as an artist—Clafferty is an Army vet with a degree in marketing who was actually denied admission to the George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology in Towson—he's able to recreate realistic images of Baltimore Ravens moments using charcoal on canvas. Each piece, he said, takes him between 4 and 10 hours. Clafferty said he's gotten some attention from …

"Witch Doctor" Seifert Appears In Parkville

Read Parkville-Overlea Patch's Q&A with Brandon Seifert, who created Witch Doctor for Image comics.

It's not often that he's been flown anywhere to do an appearance—in fact, a trip from Portland, OR to Parkville, MD is the first time that Image Comics creator and writer Brandon Seifert has "been flown anywhere". And he just couldn't resist the chance to come meet fans at Parkville's Collector's Corner. Seifert, a 32-year-old Fairbanks, AL native, has only been working professionally on comics for about two years. His first book, "Witch Doctor", was picked up by Image Comics' Robert Kirkman (of The Walking Dead fame) and produced on his Skybound imprint. Patch had a chance to speak with Seifert Wednesday night. How would you describe "Witch Doctor" for anyone who hasn't read it? Seifert: We always describe it as a horror medical drama—…

Local Writer Looks to Kickstart Comics Project

Collectors Corner store manager David Crispino turned to the online fundraising site Kickstarter to publish his first comic book.

After years of working in the comics industry, David Crispino, store manager of Collectors Corner in Parkville, decided it was time to take a shot at writing his own book—a supernatural western. Knowing what an expensive proposition publishing a comic book can be, Crispino turned to the internet fundraising site Kickstarter to self-publish his first title, an "alternate, supernatural history" of the Great Sioux War called Blood & Time. In order to get the book to the printers, Crispino, 31, will have to raise $5,000 by Oct. 13—as of Sept. 19, the week-old campaign is about a third of the way there. "I knew I would either have to pitch the book to a publisher ... or, I've been seeing movies, music and art being funneled through Kickstarter…

Pipe Band Sticks To Tradition, Looks to Grow

The Baltimore City Pipe Band practices Thursday nights at Racers Cafe in Parkville.

The music of the bagpipes is a sort of inherently divisive sound—either you love them or you hate them. If you fall into the former category, you might be interested to know that one of the oldest continuously existing non-competition pipe bands in the state practices weekly right here in Parkville. On Thursday nights, a group of between eight and 12 players from the Baltimore City Pipe Band meets at Racers Cafe to practice the drums and bagpipes. Ty Schwenk, an Aberdeen man who plays the bass drum for the band, said the commute to Parkville is worth it. Schwenk, who has been playing with the band for 5 years, said it's all about tradition. "We try to keep the tradition of the drums and pipes going," Schwenk said. Check out a video …

Parkville Rec Dance Team to Perform At Ironbirds Game

Girls from Parkville Rec's Dance X-treme and Dance Power programs will take the field Monday night.

After practicing an 8-minute choreographed dance routine for just a month, girls and women from Parkville Rec's Dance X-tremes and Dance Power program will take the field at Ripken Stadium on Monday. Program organizer Linda Brice told Patch that the group was invited to perform before the Aberdeen Ironbirds game after the team donated items for a raffle at the dance program's end-of-year recital. "It's very exciting to be able to perform at stadium," Brice said. "Our girls have been practicing their hearts out two nights a week for the last month to prepare for this." The girls, who range in age from 5 to 25, will take the field around 6:50 p.m., Brice said. Tickets for the Monday game against the Batavia Muckdogs are available on the …
