Parkville Y Family Center to Celebrate Healthy Kids Day 2013

Stop by the Y this weekend for events, games and all things encouraging healthy living.

In an effort to get kids excited about healthy living, the Parkville Family Center Y will host an event this weekend focused on physical activity and proper nutrition. Parkville's Y, 8910 Waltham Woods Road, will celebrate Healthy Kids Day 2013 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. April 27 alongside other Y centers across the country, according to the Y Maryland website. "Basically it's fun, good activities for kids and community resources; information and literature, demonstrations and things like that," said Leslie Dohler, the Parkville center's director of membership development. Parkville Y Hosts Spring Eggstravaganza

The event, which includes breakfast with the Easter Bunny, an Easter egg hunt and other activities will be held Mar. 30.

If you're looking for some Easter activities for your kids, the Parkville Family Center Y has you covered. The Y will host a "Spring Eggstravaganza" from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Mar. 30. The event, which includes breakfast with the Easter Bunny, an Easter egg hunt, crafts and games is free for Y members. Non-members get in for $5 and non-member families get in for $10. Whether you're a member or not, you have to head to the Parkville Family Center Y, 8910 Waltham Woods Road, to register in person in advance because space for the event is limited. Parkville Y Takes First In Worldwide Fitness Contest

Team members biked 20,036 miles and burned 880,668 calories during December.

Parkville's Family Center Y won big in December, placing first in a worldwide fitness competition hosted by the manufacturer of an interactive exercise bike. Members of the gym biked over 20,000 miles and burned more than 880,000 calories during December to place first out of 1,048 competitors in a contest hosted by Expresso bike manufacturer Interactive Fitness. On the company's news blog, Parkville Y Fitness Director Andy Corbett wrote in to tell the story of the team's victory. In his letter, Corbett credits Y member Serge Arbona for helping his team to victory. "I thought of for the team was Serge Arbona. Serge is a member of our center and a national champion ultra marathon runner," Corbett wrote. "He is just an amazing athlete. I …

Parkville Y Takes On New Leader

Dawn Chrystal-Wolfe took over as Center Director earlier this month.

Less than two years have passed since the Y of Central Maryland opened the Parkville Family Center Y in North Plaza, but already there's been a change in leadership at the center. Dawn Chrystal-Wolfe took the reins from her predecessor earlier this month and couldn't be more excited to get to know the community. "Right now, since I just took over I'm mostly familiar with the center," Chrystal-Wolfe said. "One of my goals is to get familiar with the area and the communities. I think that in talking to some of the members my first couple of weeks. They’re really excited to have the Y here, it’s a real asset to the community."
