Both area schools were recently included in a list published by US News & World Report.
Two area high schools have been listed among the best in the state and the country by a national publication. Parkville High School and Loch Raven High School each made the recently published US News & World Report list of the Best High Schools in the US, according to a news release from Baltimore County Public Schools. Loch Raven ranked 42nd and Parkville ranked 56th out of 64 Maryland public high schools that made the list. A total of 21,035 schools in 49 states were part of the assessment and of the 4,825 that earned a gold, silver or bronze medal, Parkville ranked 1,993 while Loch Raven ranked 1,350, the release states. Ryan Twentey, a photography and interactive media teacher, was honored by ASCD.
A Parkville High School teacher was recently honored for his education philosophies with a national award. Ryan Twentey, a 34-year-old photography and interactive media teacher, was one of two winners of the ASCD—formerly Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development—2013 Outstanding Educator Award, which recognizes outstanding teachers and administrators under the age of 40. He was recognized Sunday at the association's 68th annual conference in Chicago. "It was pretty amazing to be a part of this," Twentey said. The 12-year teacher was nominated for the honor by a supervisor. He ultimately claimed the honor following a series of interviews. "It was intensive," he said. Several area students renewed scholarships awarded for academic achievement and humanitarian work.
Area students have renewed their Carson Scholarships for academic and volunteer works. Carson Scholarships are awarded to "high-achieving students in grades 4-11 who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and humanitarian qualities," according to a news release from Baltimore County Public Schools. Four students renewed their Carson Scholarships: 714 students nationwide have renewed their Carson Scholar status as previous winners. The scholars from the Mid-Atlantic will be honored at an awards banquet April 7 at Martin's West in Woodlawn. The event is open to the public. Newscaster Sam Donaldson will be master of ceremonies. The three local students were among 10 finalists selected around Baltimore County to participate in a statewide competition next month.
Three Parkville High School students are among 10 in Baltimore County to be named finalists in the 2013 Maryland Letters About Literature Contest. The statewide contest, coordinated by the Maryland Center for the Book, is part of a national contest sponsored by the Library of Congress’ Center for the Book, according to a news release from Baltimore County Public Schools. Open to students in grades 4–10, the contest challenges young people to write to the author of a book that influenced their self-image or worldview. The petition on Change.org asks the Baltimore County Public Schools system to look into improving athletic facilities at the school.
Last year, a project to renovate the aging facilities at Parkville High School was completed and now a group is asking Baltimore County Public Schools to look into upgrading the school's athletic fields. A group of Parkville High School parents and alumni started a petition on the website Change.org asking school and elected officials to consider upgrading the football field and stadium facilities in the school. "With the exception of a new 6-lane track, our football field and "stadium" facilities are among the worst in Baltimore County," wrote John Paff, who started the petition. The museum, a room in the newly renovated school, houses real and replica artifacts from the history of the armed forces.
Where can you find replica Marine Corps uniforms from the American Revolution, real ones from the Vietnam era and even a rocket launcher? A museum in Baltimore, or Washingon D.C. would have those things for sure. But so would Parkville High School. Check out photos of some of the items on display in the gallery above. On Thursday afternoon, the school became the first in the Marines Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program in the Mid-Atlantic to install a museum dedicated to the armed forces. For the ninth year running, the school will collect toys for the Marines' program through mid-December.
If you're looking for a way to help out families in need this holiday season, you need look no further than Parkville High School. Students at the school, located at 2600 Putty Hill Avenue, will begin collecting toys for the US Marines Toys for Tots Foundation on Friday morning. The program, which is in its ninth year, is organized by students in the school's Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program and the Class of 2014. The school's doors will be open for donors to drop off toys from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. on school days through Dec. 14. Two high school quarterbacks competed in the "Longest Pass Challenge" during halftime at the Ravens-Browns game Thursday night.

A Parkville High student athlete will be honored by the Ravens this week.
To call Parkville's Beth Madore a student athlete would be an understatement. The Parkville High School junior is in the top 5 percent of her class academically and manages to play softball, basketball and soccer. As a reward for her hard work, Madore was recently named the Baltimore Ravens Athlete of the Week and will attend the Thursday night game against the Cleveland Browns where she'll get a one-of-a-kind jersey and participate in the on-field pre-game activities. In addition, Parkville High School's football team will be represented in the half-time quarterback challenge where quarterback Danny Whittler will compete for the longest pass—throwing to receivers Otis Pullen and Chris Washington. Blaine McGlothlin, a Parkville High student, won national gold at the Special Olympics Golf National Invitational Tournament over the weekend.
It all came down to one shot. Blaine McGlothlin, 19, sunk a 4-foot putt on the third day of the Special Olympics Golf National Invitational Tournament, winning a gold medal in his division of the competition. McGlothlin, a Parkville High School student who has Down syndrome, played the round taking alternating shots with his father, Rick, over a nine-hole course. The dramatic putt put them one stroke ahead the second place finishers. Monday morning, Rick and Blaine were on their way back from The Wigwam resort in Phoenix, AZ where they spent the weekend playing, but we were able to catch up with Blaine's mother Sharon McGlothlin.
