Vintage Parkville-Overlea: Church & Streetcar

Do you know where in the greater Parkville-Overlea area this photo was taken?

For this week's look into Parkville-Overlea history we turn to this photo, taken in 1936, of a church somewhere in our neighborhood. The church is still there today, but it certainly doesn't look like it did in this photograph. For what it's worth, the road is still there too—but the streetcar definitely isn't. The photo reprinted above was originally found on Baltimore County Public Library's Legacy Web, but do your best not to go look it up (that would ruin the fun). Do you know where this photo was taken? Share your best guess in the comments. If you have a photo from the history of Parkville or Overlea that you'd like to share in this weekly feature, contact editor Nick Gestido: nick.gestido@patch.com.

Video Vintage Parkville-Overlea: Club Venus Memories

This week we take a break from our weekly guessing game to share memories of an old Parkville institution.

This week we're not going to look at an old photograph and try to guess where it was taken—instead, check out this video posted to YouTube and share your memories of Parkville's Club Venus. The supper club, which opened in 1966, was formerly located in Perring Plaza shopping center. Stills in the video slideshow show tickets for nationally famous musical acts like The Four Seasons and Smokey Robinson and the Miracles and non-musical acts like comedian Rodney Dangerfield. The video was uploaded to Youtube by BaltimoreJam, a website that focuses on the Baltimore music scene. What memories do you have of Club Venus? Did you ever catch a great show there? Share your memories in the comments! Don't forget! If you have some awesome piece of …

Leaving the Club Venus in 1971 a man followed my friend and I to our car forced his way in the drivers side put a gun to my head ( I was by the door). She was beside me , told us to put our head between our needs or "we never again would see daylight". He had locked the passenger side door My friend said to me you have to get that door open that is our only hope. Somehow I did got out and ran. He…   more ›

Can you guess where in the greater Parkville-Overlea area this photo was taken?

Parts of the neighborhood shown in this vintage photograph are probably still recognizable if you drive through today. Other parts though, like the streetcar that can be seen in the foreground (lower right), have certainly changed. This photo, pulled from the Baltimore County Public Library catalog, was taken by Roger Mason back in 1926. Can you guess which neighborhood this photo shows? Tell us in the comments. If you have an interesting photo from the history of the greater Parkville-Overlea area you'd like to share on Patch, contact editor Nick Gestido at nick.gestido@patch.com.

Vintage Parkville-Overlea: Old-time Intersection

Guess where in the greater Parkville-Overlea area this photo was taken.

it can be pretty amazing to take a trip back through time, looking at photographs of our neighborhood as it stood 40, 50 and even 60 years ago. This photograph, posted to the Facebook group "You Know You're From Parkville, Md When..." by Joseph E. Smith, shows an intersection you probably know well. But do you know which one? Share your guess and your memories of Vintage Parkville-Overlea in the comments.

I also live just a couple of blocks away, and never would have imagined how it used to look. I lived about half a mile away about 40 years ago, but can't remember what the intersection looked like. Considering the heavy traffic at that intersection now, I wish the old one was back!   more ›
