Villa Cresta's Green Team On A Mission To Recycle

During American Education Week, students in the school's environmental club are collecting items to be recycled.

America Recycles Day—Nov. 15—falls in the middle of American Education Week this year and students at Parkville's Villa Cresta Elementary School are doing their part to pitch in. The school's Green Team, a student organization with about 30 members in third, fourth and fifth grade, is taking up a collection during the mornings—they're looking for aluminium cans, plastic bags and batteries along with other items in order to promote recycling in the community. "If the weather is nice we'll be outside, if not then we'll be in the lobby," said Stephanie Foy, a Villa Cresta teacher and green team advisor. How Does Your Recycling Stack Up?

Inspired by a billboard posted in Parkville's Lavender Avenue parking lot, we take a look at recycling rates for the neighborhoods of Parkville-Overlea.

The billboard in the photo above asked the question, so Patch decided to answer: "Parkville, how does your recycling stack up?" Since we've got readers from all over 21234 though, we'll take a look at recycling for the neighborhoods of Parkville, Overlea, Carney, and Hillendale/Loch Raven. When Baltimore County started single-stream recycling, the program came with an ambitious goal—to increase the residential recycling rate to an average of 50 percent countywide. A county website tracks recycling rates, and shows that all of the neighborhoods in 21234 were above the 2011 average of 14.8 percent.
