Restaurateurs Bring a Little 'Herb and Soul' To Loch Raven

The Yakona Road carryout, open since last September, recently renovated and is now a sit-down restaurant that features live music on the weekends.

When executive chef David Thomas and his partners, Brandon Taylor and Yuriy Chernov, decided to strike out on their own and open a restaurant, they knew exactly what they wanted to do. The three restaurateurs wanted to bring something unique—farm-to-table dining—to an area they felt needed it. For the last eight months, that vision was executed in the form of Herb & Soul, a carryout kitchen operated inside of a convenience store at 1702 Yakona Rd. But recently, the trio had the opportunity to lease the entire building and turn their business into a sit-down restaurant. "We always wanted to do something [more than a carryout and] the opportunity just presented itself ... just going through those trials and tribulations, this space opened up…

Bel-Loc Diner Shortens Hours of Operation

The 49-year-old Parkville icon will now only be open for breakfast and lunch.

After nearly a decade of operating for 16-and-a-half hours a day, the Bel-Loc Diner is now cutting back its hours. "It was just time to do it," said owner Bill Doxanas, who has helmed the Parkville icon that helped inspire Barry Levinson's 1982 film "Diner" since its opening in April 1964. The diner will now be open for breakfast and lunch from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, Doxanas said. It previously operated from 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Doxanas declined to comment further on the reason for the decreased hours.

My family has gone to Bel-Loc for many years! It's a family tradition! The breakfast food has always been #1 along with the home-made shakes! I hope that Bel-Loc doesn't go down the tubes, but I can understand that Bill would not want to sell, after all, his parents actually BROUGHT that dinner from NY to Loch Raven and Joppa intersection! Whatever Bel-Loch does, we will remain loyal customers!   more ›

Local Women Bring Bellydance To Joppa Road Restaurant

A dancer from the troupe Aubergine performs each Sunday at Kitchen of India in Parkville.

It's not easy to find dinner and a show in the Parkville area, but if you have a free Sunday evening you're in luck. Bellydancers from the Towson-based troupe Aubergine perform at 7 p.m. weekly at Kitchen of India on Joppa Road. Nina Rutledge, the troupe leader and a bellydance instructor, said she used to run a student show (called a hafla) at the restaurant and remembered owner Mohammad "Babu" Rahmen from her time there. "Aubergine is my troupe and they started as a student troupe ... we'd do a performance at a nursing home or a local belly dance show," Rutledge said. "Slowly the group got better and better." That's when she decided it was time for them to find a regular gig. Now Rutledge, a Towson resident who performs under the "nom de…
