The state semifinal games will be played this weekend at Bel Air High School.
After four rounds of play, one local girls lacrosse team has been crowned a regional champion and advances to the state semifinals. The Class 1A/2A North region champion Loch Raven Raiders will travel to Bel Air High School at 8 p.m. Friday to take on West region champs Winters Mill. To earn the spot in the state semis, the girls crushed Pikesville, 20-7, earlier this week, according to the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association website. While Winters Mill has had to play a total of four games during the playoffs to earn the right to play Loch Raven, the Raiders should be fresh having earned a first-round bye and a second-round forfeit victory against Overlea. Mike Maiste and Mary Ellen Pluember were recently recognized by the Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce for Excellence in teaching.
Two area educators were recently honored for excellence in the classroom by the Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce. Mary Ellen Pluemer and Mike Maiste, who both teach at Pine Grove Middle School, were among 11 educators recognized at the economic group's Awards for Excellence in Education dinner Monday night at Martin's West, according to a news release from Baltimore County Public Schools. The two were selected from among a group of nominees representing 37 Baltimore County Schools as suggested by principals, community members, and students, the release states. The school will no longer offer the course of study during the 2013-2014 school year.
Seniors who graduate from Loch Raven High School this year will be the last students at the school who have the opportunity to complete a course of study in child development. The program, which schools spokesman Charles Herndon called "long-standing", will no longer be offered by the school during the 2013-2014 school year, Herndon confirmed to Patch. "It has to do with staffing choices and the choices of students at the school—what students are interested in and what opportunties we can make available to them," Herndon said. Students at the Carney-area middle school have been busy providing window coverings for a Towson shopping center and releasing a terrapin turtle they raised.
Students Release Terrapin In Natural Habitat Sheldon, a terrapin turtle and one-time Carney resident, has been released into his natural habitat in the Chesapeake Bay. The turtle was raised by students in Pine Grove Middle School's Environmental Science Club and last week, Pine Grove teacher Michael Lashley accompanied students Shane Vong, Connor Ourand, Garrett Rodas, Rachel Henry and Julie Tran to release him into the wild. Poplar Island, technically a part of Talbot County but located in the Chesapeake Bay, is a natural habitat for diamondback terrapin turtles that's been restored over the past decade. Both area schools were recently included in a list published by US News & World Report.
Two area high schools have been listed among the best in the state and the country by a national publication. Parkville High School and Loch Raven High School each made the recently published US News & World Report list of the Best High Schools in the US, according to a news release from Baltimore County Public Schools. Loch Raven ranked 42nd and Parkville ranked 56th out of 64 Maryland public high schools that made the list. A total of 21,035 schools in 49 states were part of the assessment and of the 4,825 that earned a gold, silver or bronze medal, Parkville ranked 1,993 while Loch Raven ranked 1,350, the release states. The latest on a situation regarding a possibly armed man seen near a Parkville Elementary School Monday afternoon.
UPDATE (3:40 p.m.) - Baltimore County Police have identified a man who was seen walking near a Parkville elementary school while possibly armed on Monday. The man's identity has not been released, according to a news release from the police department. Investigators have determined that the man was carrying an antique rifle as he walked across school grounds toward the intersection of Rader and Ardmore Avenues Monday aftenoon around the time that Villa Cresta Elementary School dismissed for the day, wrote police spokeswoman Elise Armacost in an email. The weapon, Armacost wrote, was not loaded and police are uncertain as to whether or not it was operable. Officers responded to the school in the 2600 block of Rader Avenue around 3:30 p.m. …

Baltimore County police crews responded to the Parkville elementary school Monday afternoon.
Baltimore County police officers "flooded" Villa Cresta Elementary in Parkville Monday afternoon after parents reported seeing a man with a gun on school grounds, according to a school system spokesman. At around 3:20 p.m., before school dismissal, parents waiting to pick up students told Villa Cresta administrators that they saw a man carrying a long gun running across a field on the school campus, said Charles Herndon, a school system spokesman. The man reportedly then jumped into a white work van that drove off. Herndon said school staff immediately notified police, and kept students in the building for approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Friday evening, April 12, the elementary school (2701 Summit Avenue) will host the event from 5-8 p.m., according to a flier sent by event organizer Liz Foreman. The Bearly Used Book Sale, named for Pine Grove's panda bear mascot, will feature used books aplenty, along with special guest readers, activities for kids and more, Foreman wrote in an email. The Parkville delegate offers scholarships to students who live within the 8th Legislative District.
Parkville Delegate John Cluster is offering a scholarship to help area students pay for college, but the deadline for application is fast approaching. Students living in the 8th legislative district, which covers Parkville, Carney, Overlea, Fullerton, Nottingham and Perry Hall, can apply for the scholarship but the applications must be postmarked by April 15, according to the delegate's web site. Other qualifications for the scholarship include a minimum 2.0 GPA, school activities, community service, work to help pay for education and financial need, according to a news release from Del. Members of the Carney Elementary School PTA plan to speak at a Tuesday Board of Education meeting.
Carney Elementary School parents are planning to speak about a lack of air conditioning at their children's school at a Tuesday evening board of education meeting. The Carney Elementary School PTA sees the installation of air conditioning throughout the entire school as a "long overdue" issue, according to a news release from the group. The school, which is partially air-conditioned, was ranked 36th out of 48 Baltimore County Public Schools in terms of priority for the installation of air conditioning, according to a report release by the school system back in September.
