Numerous business and property owners turned out alongside residents and elected officials to discuss the possibility of revitalizing the Harford Road business district in Parkville.
The Parkville community turned out in force Tuesday night in a show of soldiarity that unequivocally stated: we're ready to revitalize our neighborhood. Over 70 residents, business owners and property owners turned out for a meeting organized by the all-volunteer Parkville Main Street Committee and orchestrated by Baltimore County's Department of Planning. "This all began with a streetscape," said Main Street Committee member Andrea Messier. "Now that we have nice sidewalks to make it safe and walkable . . . The community is really ready for the second phase of the Parkville revitalization project." To Messier and the other members of the Main Street Committee, like Greater Parkville Community Council president Ruth Baisden, that second …

Local couple points to faith, family and good old fashioned customer service as the reasons for their success.
John and Monica Panzer have come a long way since they started their business in a 700-square-foot basement space under Dino's in Perry Hall. Just Audio, the Panzer's audio repair shop, has since moved into a storefront on Harford Road in Parkville and the couple are enjoying a growing number of customers—but back in September '05 when they launched, they were only authorized to do repairs for one manufacturer. As time went on and the business grew, John knew that the space the business occupied needed to grow too. "There was no way we could stay where we were," John said. The Panzers found their opportunity to move to Parkville in June of 2007 and haven't looked back since. "Originally I didn't want to move over here," John said of the …
Parkville's Main Street Committee has organized an open meeting with the Baltimore County Department of Planning.
The good people of the Parkville Main Street Committee have organized a meeting tonight with the Baltimore County Department of Planning to talk about the future of Parkville's business district and you're invited. The meeting will be held from 7-9 p.m. at the Parkville Recreation Center. According to Andrea Messier, a Parkville Main Street Committee member, the sixth district planner for Baltimore County—Laurie Hays—is scheduled to attend the meeting. Messier said that tonight's meeting has been a long time coming—the Main Street Committee first sat down with the Planning Department back in July. "We talked about our concerns for Parkville—we had just finished the streetscape project, that was the first part of the revitalization of the …

This North Plaza music shop has been teaching lessons and putting together bands for close to nine years.
The name of Charlie Higgs' school-slash-shop in North Plaza is no lie—they really are All About Music. Higgs and his staff of 34 instructors teach a total of about 560 lessons per week to students eager to learn to play any instrument. "We teach all brass instruments; you can divide that down into categories: trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba; we teach woodwinds, that's clarinet, flute, oboe, bassoon, and alto, tenor, and baritone saxes," Higgs said. "Violin, viola, cello, harmonica, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, electric and acoustic guitar, synth, piano, keyboard in general. Voice, I think that about covers it." They don't just do music lessons either. All About Music also sells guitars and amplifiers, and Higgs said that they rent …

The historic building, once a general store renowned for its ice cream, was recently purchased by a group of first-time restauranteurs.
If you live anywhere close to Loch Raven Reservoir, odds are good that you have some memory of Sanders' Corner—the restaurant with the outdoor patio, located at the corner of Cromwell Bridge Road and Loch Raven Drive. Whether to you it was a nice place to enjoy a meal on the deck overlooking part of the Loch Raven reservoir property or the place you went with your parents to get ice cream, one thing is for sure: Sanders' Corner has been sorely missed since it shuttered it's doors back in March 2011. Recently a group of Harford County men, including one of the forces behind successful Bel Air staple Sean Bolan's, bought the restaurant and are planning to reopen the location as McFaul's IronHorse Tavern at Sanders' Corner by early May at the…

Tim Berkemeier has spent his life learning martial arts and now he's teaching the style he considers most essential at his Harford Road school.
After years of martial arts training, Parkville resident Tim Berkemier still felt like something was missing. For Berkemeier, that something was an ancient Chinese martial art called Wing Chun. Check out the video in the gallery above to see Berkemeier break open a coconut with his bare hnds. "I grew up a big fan of Bruce Lee, so I looked up what he studied and found Wing Chun kung fu," Berkemeier said. Berkemeier needed to find someone to teach him the ages-old art, and so he turned to William Cheung—an appointed grandmaster of the Wing Chun style and teacher to Berkemeier's idol Bruce Lee. He honed his skills under Cheung's tutelage, and now Berkemeier is a Seifu—a Chinese word meaning teacher—to his own students at Baltimore Traditional…

This Rossville Boulevard storage center has been serving the community since 2003.
If you've seen any of the popular TV shows about people who bid on foreclosed storage units—like TruTV's Storage Hunters or A&E's Storage Wars—the idea of a self-storage business probably brings to mind the drama of those men and women who search, oftentimes through trash, to find treasure. In real life, it's much less dramatic. Or at least that's what Fullerton Self Storage manager Karrie Barresi has to say about it. In her three-and-a-half years with the company, she's seen some interesting stuff during auctions: antique guns, an old chest full of 1960's Baltimore Sun editions detailing the Civil Rights movement, even a handgun—that one had to be reported to police, she said. For the most part, Karrie's job is quieter than the television…

What would you like to see done with this vacant commercial space?
Carney Village Shopping Center at the intersection of Harford and Joppa Roads is generally a hive of activity. Anchored by a Mars supermarket, the shopping center is home to a CVS, an eye doctor, an Asian restaurant and a Bank of America branch — an outlying building houses Raimondi's Florist and the new Yia Yia's Bakery branch. There's only one vacancy in the entire shopping center—a space close to the anchor store formerly occupied by Japanese restaurant Hikari Sushi. The space, managed by Continental Realty, has been vacant for close to a year, and it doesn't look as though any work has been going on there. Representatives from Continental did not return a phone call seeking comment about the location. We've had some excellent …

Organic foods for everyone from vegans to those on raw food diets are the order of the day at this Harford Road bodega
Since we started the Visions for Vacancies feature on Patch three weeks ago, a common suggestion among our readers has been an organic food store like Trader Joe's, but did you know we already have a place to get organic flour, sugar, spices, and even produce right in Parkville? Nature's Pantry owner and Parkville resident Sam Walters has been providing healthy food to the Parkville area from her store at 7984 Harford Road for the last 36 years. Like Parkville-Overlea Patch on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for instant updates. "I cater to everybody: vegans, vegetarians, people doing raw foods diets, people with celiac [disorder]," Walters said. "If you come and and I don't have it, I'll get it for you; I'm like your personal shopper …

I love the idea of a cultural arts center and a children's theatre. Parkville seems to be a very community / family oriented area and hopefully another restaurant or two will consider the location   more ›
