Residency requirements could thwart Timothy Tenne's efforts to get his name on the 2014 ballot
Timothy Tenne has lived in Baltimore County nearly all his life except for the time he spent in the Air Force. The retired Lt. Colonel and commercial airline pilot wants to be Baltimore County Executive but he may need a little help to meet the residency requirements. "There is going to have to be some kind of an opinion from the Attorney General or we're going to need a Charter change," Tenne said speaking of his eligibility. Tenne filed earlier this year and is listed on the Maryland State Board of Elections website as a provisional candidate. Arne Duncan is slated to visit Loch Raven High School on April 10.
U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan is making a third trip to Baltimore County—this time to discuss gun control. "This is a topic he's been very passionate about," said Dallas Dance, superintendent of Baltimore County Public Schools. Duncan will hold a town hall meeting at Loch Raven High School on April 10. A precise time has not yet been set. The secretary previously visited Perry Hall High School on Aug. 22, 2012 to discuss education reform as part of a school system professional development event. Perry Hall guidance counselor Jesse Wasmer will be joined by Daniel Borowy.
The guidance counselor credited with heroically intervening during the August shooting at Perry Hall High School will throw out the first pitch Sunday at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Jesse Wasmer will throw out the first pitch before the first postseason game in Baltimore in 15 years. Wasmer will be accompanied by Perry Hall student Daniel Borowy, who was shot during the Aug. 27 incident, the Orioles announced Sunday morning. Read more Patch coverage of the shooting here. Boscov's wrapped up a weekend of festivities with donations and a ribbon-cutting to mark the re-opening of their store in White Marsh Mall. The 200,000-square-foot department store opened to great fanfare, too, with the help of Perry Hall High School's marching band on Sunday morning. There were actually two ribbon-cuttings on Sunday: the official one—led by actress Shirley Jones—and another ribbon with $100 bills affixed to it that represented $1,000 in donations by Boscov's to the United Way of Central Maryland. Baltimore-area United Way affiliates did those honors. A nonprofit gala held at the store on Friday was expected to raise $25,000 for area organizations. The teen indicted in shooting at Perry Hall High School has 30 days to re-apply for bail.
UPDATED (11:30 a.m.)—The teen accused in the August shooting at Perry Hall High School remains in jail following a bail review hearing. Robert W. Gladden Jr. will remain in jail until the release of a mental health evaluation in his case, Baltimore County Circuit Court Judge John Grason Turnbull III ruled Thursday. Gladden, 15, faces 29 criminal charges including attempted first-degree murder and assault related to the Aug. 27 shooting incident at Perry Hall High School. Columbia attorney Clarke Ahlers, who is representing Gladden, elaborated on the judge's decision. After 17-year-old Daniel Borowy was shot during lunch at Perry Hall High School, a Parkville musician wrote a song for the injured teen that's been making the rounds on social media. The Baltimore Sun reports that Greg Wimmer, 31, felt like he needed to help when he learned of the shooting. "Everyone in the community, they just want to do something to help, and I kept asking myself 'What can I do?'" he told the Sun. "I thought, there's probably nothing I could do to make a difference, but something told me to write a song." The song, called "Daniel, We Pray" is posted to YouTube and attached to this video. Charges against the teen include nine counts of attempted murder.
Updated (5:10 p.m.)—A teen charged as an adult in the shooting at Perry Hall High School faces nine counts of attempted murder as part of an indictment handed up Tuesday by a Baltimore County grand jury. Robert Gladden Jr. also faces nine counts each of first-degree assault and reckless endangerment, as well as one count each of use of a firearm in the commission of a crime and carrying a weapon on school property. Andrew Piper, Gladden's stepfather, remains charged with possession of a weapon by a prohibited person. Police searched Piper's home in the hours after the shooting and discovered weapons locked in a safe, according to a statement released by Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger. The attorney representing Robert W. Gladden Jr.—the 15-year-old accused of shooting another student in Perry Hall High School Monday morning—is challenging investigators' narrative of the attack. George Psoras Jr., whose legal practice is based in Lutherville, claims that Gladden, a sophomore, was bullied and never intended to harm anyone when he brought a gun into the school's cafeteria, The Associated Press reports. Psoras said he believes Gladden shot into the floor, and then shot the gun again accidentally when teachers tried to wrestle it away, according to the report. Police said the gun used in the shooting did not come from the Kingsville home.
The stepfather of the teen accused in Monday's shooting at Perry Hall High School was arrested on drug and firearm charges, according to police. Andrew E. Piper of the 8500 block of Bradshaw Road in Kingsville was charged with marijuana possession and illegal firearm possession. He is currently free on $500,000 bond. A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for Dec. 3. Piper was arrested Monday during a police search of the family's Kingsville home that was related to the shooting earlier that day.
