Snowstorm Could Drop Up to 10 inches in Baltimore Metro Area

Most communities could see 4-8 inches total, but Randallstown, Owings Mills and Reisterstown could get the most, at up to 10 inches from Tuesday night through Wednesday night, according to the National Weather Service.

As the snowstorm approaches, and the forecast gets more specific, it looks like the Baltimore Metro area could get up to about 8 inches of snow from late Tuesday night through Wednesday night. However, Owings Mills and Reisterstown could get more, at up to 10 inches, according to the National Weather Service. A winter weather watch, including snow, is in effect for the county, as well as for the Baltimore and D.C. metro areas. During this time, wind gusts could get as high as 35 mph. Combined with heavy snow, there could be power outages, it states. BGE is bringing in 500 extra employees to help with service repairs and 1,750 of its own crews to be ready in case of "hundreds of thousands of outages in its service area, according to a news …

BGE: Prepare for Outages

The utility says heavy rain and wind in the next few days may lead to outages in central Maryland.

Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) is warning customers in the central Maryland area to prepare for weather-related outages as an approaching weather system is forecasting heavy rain Thursday night coupled with high winds Friday and Saturday. In a statement issued by spokesperson Rachael Lighty Thursday morning, the utility said it was “proactively preparing” for outages, and directed customers to online tools for “enhanced customer service” tools. “BGE continues to monitor the forecast high wind and heavy rain, which is expected to begin with rain on Thursday afternoon,” Jeannette Mills, vice president and chief customer officer for BGE said in the statement. “This expected weather brings the potential of trees falling onto power …

Above ground power lines are the problem. We're using 1950's technology. My neighborhood has underground lines and we rarely suffer outages. When we do, it's from when the above ground lines outside our area fail.   more ›

Restoring Power to Take Days

More than 400,000 without power in Central Maryland; 400 linemen arriving from FL and MS in 2-3 days, BGE officials say.

More than 400,000 Baltimore Gas and Electric customers in Central Maryland remain without electricity in the wake of a powerful and swiftly moving storm that passed through the area Friday night. BGE spokesperson Rob Gould said that it will likely be several days before power is restored to all customers. "We know this is going to be a multi-day response," Gould said at BGE's storm operations command center in northwest Baltimore County. "This is not something where we'll be able to restore power in a couple of days." According to BGE's storm center page, more than 418,000 customers--or about a third of the 1.2 million customers the utility company serves in Central Maryland--were without electricity by mid-day Saturday. Power outages were…

Warning about eating food that needs refrigeration: I did not think about this when I ordered take-out from a little Chinese kitchen on Sunday. Now I wish I did. They were closed all day Saturday, and did not even have a single ice cube to spare for my 'cold' drink. I ate chicken that had been unrefrigerated for more than 24 hours and really felt bad afterwards! Note to future self: DON'T do that!   more ›

Where to Find Dry Ice

Here are a list of three area dry ice stores and tips for using the product.

When residents were out of power for several days during Hurricane Irene, many turned to dry ice to help keep their refrigerators cold. Baltimore Gas and Electric says some residents can expect to be out of power for as long as a week following Friday night's storms. So many in the Baltimore area will need to stock up. Baltimore Gas and Electric stopped providing dry ice to residents in 2003. Here's contact info for a few area stores that offer dry ice, according to a list provided by Baltimore County shortly after Hurricane Irene. Some hardware stores may also offer dry ice. Be sure to call ahead. AAA Ice's website offers some tips on how to handle and use dry ice. Always use gloves and keep in mind its shelf life—only 24 to 36 hours. Be …

Hundreds of Thousands Without Power Following Friday Storm

BGE says recovery could take days.

(Updated: 9:38 a.m.)—Bill Bickel was getting his family ready for the sun, wind and water at the beaches of North Carolina. Instead, the wind and water came to him before the family could leave their Bellona Avenue home Saturday morning. A tree branch fell from their yard, ripping apart a power pole and yanking the power line from their home. "I think there was a little bit of an explosion" shortly after midnight, Bickel said. "I was thankful it didn't hit the house, to be honest with you." Bickel was out on his driveway surveying the damage with his 2-1/2 year old son Zachary, who was dressed and ready for a vacation. "As you can see, with the kids in their beach shorts, they're ready to go," he said. Bickel called 911 last night—couldn't…

Wow! County Executive Kamenetz has his finger on the pulse of the community. He knows what they want! Non-potable water is defined as water unfit for human consumption. Perhaps the water he is providing to people who cannot pump water is coming from the 50 million gallons of sewerage leaking into Baltimore County streams and rivers because of the failure by the county to provide back-up power at …   more ›
