Educators from Signapore are visiting the Parkville-based Children's Guild for 2 weeks as part of a program to exchange ideas.
A group of Singaporean educators are visiting Parkville to exchange ideas with educators at a local school for children with special needs. The Children's Guild, a non-profit that serves kids with a range of disabilities and operates a public charter school called the Monarch Academy, will exchange ideas with the Asian delegation about "education policy, school organization and instructional strategies." On Monday afternoon, the visiting educators toured an exhibit at the Children's Guild called the "Brain Path". The Children's Guild describes the exhibition as a "colorful ... hallway filled with larger-than-life props and images representing the functions of the brain—everything from the five senses to emotions—in order to present brain-…

A new tenant is coming to Perring Plaza this fall. Micro Center, a national computer and electronics retailer, will move into the space left vacant when the RoomStore moved out of the shopping center. A grand opening date has not been set at this point but Lisa Geiger, a spokeswoman for Federal Realty, said the management company expects the new store should open in November. Ed Lukens, a spokesman for Micro Center, said the company is excited to open the new store—the second in Maryland and first in the Baltimore metropolitan area. Already, the company has launched a contest through their Facebook page and plans to give away one LG 3D HDTV per week until Oct. 21. Lukens explained that Micro Center stores feature a large "Build Your Own PC…

For Trish Kane, autism has been a part of daily life for the last 18 years. Before her son Eric was born, Kane said she never gave much thought to the disorder—today she sits on the board of the Abilities Network and works for Pathfinders for Autism. On Sept. 30, Kane will take part in the Abilities Network fundraiser called Walkabout at Goucher College alongside her son and family friends Angel and Nick Myers, another Parkvillian mother-son duo, on a team called "My Buddy." For Kane, the fundraiser is just another way to give back. "I'm pretty much 24-7 autism," Kane said. "I want to contribute, and financially I cannot do it on my own. I have fun with this ... it feels good to do something, you just want to help someone." Early on in her…

This week, instead of a guessing game, I'm going to ask an honest question since I'm not sure of the answer. The nursery, pictured here in a photo from 1939, was called E. Pielke & Son, and was incorporated in 1912, according to information posted along with the photo on the Baltimore County Public Library's legacy web. The caption at the bottom of the photo places it on Belair Road in Fullerton. But do you know where? What do you remember about the old days of Parkville and Overlea? Share your memories (and your answer) in the comments.

The school, opened in 1961, was ranked as needing an air conditioning system the most according to a list posted by the Baltimore County School system.
Air conditioning in our public schools is something of a hot-button issue around Baltimore County at the moment, and a priority list recently released by the school system shows the greatest need is at one area high school. Overlea High School topped the list released by the school system late last week. At the time, school system spokesman Charles Herndon told Patch's Nayana Davis that a full explanation of the priority list would be provided at a Sept. 18 meeting of the Board of Education. That meeting was cancelled due to inclement weather and is scheduled to take place tonight. Here's where area schools rank on the county's air conditioning priority list of 47 schools: The air conditioning priority list covers only those schools where …
Collectors Corner store manager David Crispino turned to the online fundraising site Kickstarter to publish his first comic book.
After years of working in the comics industry, David Crispino, store manager of Collectors Corner in Parkville, decided it was time to take a shot at writing his own book—a supernatural western. Knowing what an expensive proposition publishing a comic book can be, Crispino turned to the internet fundraising site Kickstarter to self-publish his first title, an "alternate, supernatural history" of the Great Sioux War called Blood & Time. In order to get the book to the printers, Crispino, 31, will have to raise $5,000 by Oct. 13—as of Sept. 19, the week-old campaign is about a third of the way there. "I knew I would either have to pitch the book to a publisher ... or, I've been seeing movies, music and art being funneled through Kickstarter…
