Recher Nightclub Plan Worries Towson Residents

Community leader Paul Hartman said he would have liked advanced notice of plans to convert the Recher Theatre into the Torrent Lounge nightclub.

Greater Towson Council of Community Associations President Paul Hartman fielded calls from residents after news of plans to convert Recher Theatre into a nightclub called Torrent Lounge broke on Wednesday. "There are legitimate concerns based on the past history with nightclubs," said Hartman, referring to conflicts that arose 10 years ago between community members and Generation Xtremes Under 21 Nightclub, which was housed in the building currently occupied by The Greene Turtle. Hartman said young adults and teens were constantly milling about on the streets as a result of Generation Xtremes. "It caused a lot of problems in the area," he said. Kamenetz, Marks Voice Differing Reactions to Recher Nightclub Transition

Co-owner Brian Recher shared plans to convert the Towson concert venue into a nightclub on Wednesday.

Two government leaders offered different responses to the announcement of the Recher Theatre's planned conversion to a nightclub called Torrent Lounge. County Executive Kevin Kamenetz lauded the Rechers for their efforts, and voiced his support for the initiative. "I am delighted that the Recher family plans to continue their tradition of reinvesting in downtown Towson with a half-million dollar project to create an attractive upscale nightclub," Kamenetz said in a statement. "I am confident that the Rechers will comply with all County rules and regulations and that this will be yet another positive addition to Towson." Recher Theatre Shutting Down, Torrent Lounge Opening In Place

Owners of the concert venue plan to start construction of the Torrent Lounge nightclub in late-March.

(Update 3:49 p.m.)—After a nearly 17-year run, the Recher Theatre, a well-known Towson concert venue, is closing its doors. The Recher family, which owns the venue and the attached bar and restaurant The Rec Room, plans to convert the space into a nightclub called Torrent Lounge. "The [nightclub] scene is doing much better," said Brian Recher, who co-owns the spot with his brothers Steve Recher and Scott Recher. "The younger kids are going toward the DJ scene more." The Rechers have already started the first phase of the transition by revamping patio space at the venue. The venue is not profitable. But I don't think a nightclub is the answer. I think they should have kept it a concert venue and hired a more qualified booking agent.   more ›
