Restaurateurs Bring a Little 'Herb and Soul' To Loch Raven

The Yakona Road carryout, open since last September, recently renovated and is now a sit-down restaurant that features live music on the weekends.

When executive chef David Thomas and his partners, Brandon Taylor and Yuriy Chernov, decided to strike out on their own and open a restaurant, they knew exactly what they wanted to do. The three restaurateurs wanted to bring something unique—farm-to-table dining—to an area they felt needed it. For the last eight months, that vision was executed in the form of Herb & Soul, a carryout kitchen operated inside of a convenience store at 1702 Yakona Rd. But recently, the trio had the opportunity to lease the entire building and turn their business into a sit-down restaurant. "We always wanted to do something [more than a carryout and] the opportunity just presented itself ... just going through those trials and tribulations, this space opened up…

Recher Nightclub Plan Worries Towson Residents

Community leader Paul Hartman said he would have liked advanced notice of plans to convert the Recher Theatre into the Torrent Lounge nightclub.

Greater Towson Council of Community Associations President Paul Hartman fielded calls from residents after news of plans to convert Recher Theatre into a nightclub called Torrent Lounge broke on Wednesday. "There are legitimate concerns based on the past history with nightclubs," said Hartman, referring to conflicts that arose 10 years ago between community members and Generation Xtremes Under 21 Nightclub, which was housed in the building currently occupied by The Greene Turtle. Hartman said young adults and teens were constantly milling about on the streets as a result of Generation Xtremes. "It caused a lot of problems in the area," he said. Similar to Councilman David Marks, Hartman expressed dismay about finding out about the plans …

Joppa Road Salvation Army Closed, Relocating

An employee said he's not sure where the store will move.

The Salvation Army store on Joppa Road is closed—the doors are boarded up and spray painted with a message that says as much. An employee at the organization's headquarters, who declined to be identified, said the shop closed due to a small fire but would be relocating. He said he was not sure where the store was moving. Back in November, Baltimore County fire personnel quickly controlled a blaze at the shop, located at 1748 Joppa Road. No information was available as to where the store would reopen. Did you shop at the Salvation Army thrift store? Are you sad to see it go? Tell us in the comments.

La Cakerie Expanding Space, Rolling Out Food Truck

The Towson bakery is also introducing more savory menu items.

La Cakerie has only been open for just more than a month, but the downtown Towson bakery already has some big changes in store. Owner Jason Hisley, a Parkville resident who won Food Network's Cupcake Wars in 2011, said Wednesday that the bakery will expand its space at 49 W. Chesapeake Avenue and introduce more savory menu items. "We're looking to do more of a bakery, cafe vibe," said Hisley, who noted that fresh baked artisanal breads will remain the core of the business. New savory selections include pretzel dogs, soups and breakfast sandwiches. The cafe, which has free wireless internet, will also start providing espresso-based beverages. "We're ever-evolving to give our customers what they want," Hisley said. "We want [La Cakerie] to …

Loch Raven Deli Reboots After Outages

Pastore's has been closed since last week's storms.

Residents looking to restock at Pastore's Italian Delly following a week of power outages have been in for disappointment the last few days. A sign outside the shop on Loch Raven Boulevard tells shoppers that the store is closed due to power troubles. Speaking to Patch briefly between errands, owner Vince Pastore said the shop, like many residents, had lost power for several days after the devastating derecho storm hit on June 29. "It's a little rough patch, just like all our neighbors," he said. "But we're getting back on our feet now." Pastore's shop is usually closed Mondays, giving Pastore a chance to restock. He said, in the brief interview, that the store will open on time on Tuesday. On the other side of Towson, you'll find some of …

The worst service I have ever, ever, EVER, experienced. It took 15 minutes for anyone to even acknowledge us after we were seated. About 10 workers walked by us numerous times and they did not even speak! WOW! Customer Service is not what these people know how to give. The service was so BAD we could not enjoy our meal. I thought restaruants were in business to turn tables and make an impression…   more ›

Q&A: Loch Raven Mom Digs Up Deals

For two years, Amie Voith has run Economoms Baltimore, a blog dedicated to finding tips for moms on a budget.

Amie Voith has turned bargain hunting from a coupon-clipping hobby to a 21st century calling. For two years, the Loch Raven Village resident has run Economoms Baltimore, a blog featuring deals and tips for moms on a budget. Last week, she turned her deal-hunting into a full-time gig with Certifikid, a family-oriented daily deal site. We spoke to Voith about her blog and she shared some of her secrets. Tell me in a nutshell what Economoms is. How did it begin? I created it about two years ago when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter. I started looking into how much baby and kid stuff cost and what kinds of events are out there for families, and I was like, "Wow, this is pretty expensive. I can see how this can start adding up." So I…
