Powerball Jackpot Raised to Largest in Game's History

Winning numbers in Saturday's drawing could net a $600 million prize.

The jackpot in Saturday's Powerball drawing has been raised to a game-record $600 million, Maryland Lottery officials announced Friday. The increase, fueled by ticket sales, is the second in as many days. The cash option for the new prize is $376.9 million. The prize, if awarded Saturday, would be the second largest jackpot prize in history, behind a $656 million Mega Millions jackpot awarded last year. One of the winning tickets nationwide was sold at a 7-Eleven in Milford Mill. The drawing will be aired live locally on WBAL-TV at 11:22 p.m. Saturday. The jackpot has "rolled" (that is, no ticket has had the full winning numbers) 13 times since April, according to lottery officials. Powerball's previous record jackpot was $587 million, won…

Powerball Jackpot Upped to $550 Million

The prize is the third largest in American history, according to lottery officials.

The Powerball jackpot for Saturday's drawing has been raised to become what would be the third-largest jackpot prize in American history. Due to strong sales, the jackpot for Saturday was raised from $475 million to $550 million, with a $350.1 million cash option. It is the second largest prize in Powerball's history. No ticket has had the winning numbers for the past 13 drawings—since early April, according to a Maryland Lottery press release. Maryland has had two winning Powerball tickets since the Maryland Lottery joined the game in 2010. One was a Pennsylvania couple who purchased a ticket in Elkton on Christmas Eve in 2011 that won them $128.8 million. That September, an Abingdon couple won $108.8 million, according to the release. …

Open Thread: How Would You Spend Your Powerball Winnings?

The new jackpot has reached $550 million.

To paraphrase comedian Chris Rock: $500 million! Good lord, that’s a lot of money. After 15 straight Powerball drawings without a winner, the jackpot, which has a $327 million cash pay out, is at a record high, Patch editor Nicholas Gestido reported Tuesday. UPDATE: The jackpot has increased again. How about $550 million? But the best part—excluding the person or people who actually win—is dreaming about what you would do with all that money. Some people would do something eminently practical like paying off the mortgage, some would want to be philanthropic and others would train an army of monkeys to run their hyperlocal news website so they can sleep all day. Hopefully when the drawing happens at 10:59 p.m., your dreams will become …

Powerball Jackpot Increased to $500 Million Ahead of Wednesday Drawing

Maryland Lottery officials announced the increase Tuesday morning.

The jackpot for Wednesday night's Powerball drawing was already the largest in the game's history at $425 million but Tuesday morning, lottery officials announced that the prize pool had increased. Wednesday's drawing will now be for a $500 million jackpot with a $327 million cash option, according to an email from Maryland Lottery spokeswoman Erica Palmisano. The news comes after 15 straight Powerball drawings without a winner. There have been two jackpot winners in our state since Maryland started to participate in January 2010: in Dec. 2011 an anonymous Pennsylvania couple bought a $128 million jackpot winner in Elkton and in Sept. 2011, an anonymous couple bought a $108 million winning ticket in Abingdon, according to an email from …

Powerball Jackpot Grows to $200 Million

Two Maryland Lottery players won $200K second-tier prizes following last Saturday's drawing; next drawing is set for Wednesday night.

The multi-state Powerball lottery game has reached $200 million for Wednesday night's drawing, according to the Maryland Lottery. This comes as two lucky Maryland players are now $200,000 richer after winning a second-tier prize following Saturday's Powerball drawing. Those winning tickets were purchased at Tom’s Liquors, located at 1592 Annapolis Road in Odenton, and 7-11, located at 6570 Coventry Way in Clinton. The winners matched all five white balls, only missing the Power Ball, to yield the $200,000 prize.  Winning numbers from the drawing were 12, 20, 43, 51, 55 and Power Ball 11. Winners have 182 days to claim their prizes. Lottery retailers who sell winning second-tier tickets receive a $1,000 commission.  Since no one won the …
